National Parks Vocabulary for Students

Canyon
A deep, narrow valley with steep sides, often carved by a river over millions of years.
Conservation
The wise use and protection of natural resources so they last for the future.
Ecosystem
A community of living things and their environment working together as a system.
Endangered
A species that is at a high risk of becoming extinct (disappearing forever).
Erosion
The process where wind, water, or ice wears away rocks and soil.
Geyser
A hot spring that occasionally sends a tall column of water and steam into the air.
Glacier
A huge, slow-moving mass of ice that stays frozen year-round.
Habitat
The natural home or environment where a specific plant or animal lives.
Landmark
A recognizable natural or man-made feature used for navigation or historical importance.
Native
A plant or animal that naturally belongs in a specific place (it wasn't brought there by humans).
National Monument
A protected area similar to a National Park, but often smaller or focused on one specific historical thing.
Plateau
A large, flat area of land that is higher than the land around it.
Preservation
Keeping something exactly as it is to protect it from damage or change.
Ranger
A person trained to protect the park and teach visitors about its history and nature.
Sedimentary
Rock formed by layers of sand, mud, and pebbles squeezing together over time.
Species
A specific group of similar living things that can move and produce offspring.
Tundra
A cold, treeless area where the ground is usually frozen.
Valley
A low area of land between hills or mountains.
Wilderness
An area of land that is mostly untouched by humans.
